J. G. NIEDEREGGER GMBH & CO. KG, with is approximately 700 employees, was the first sweets company in Lübeck to meet the requirements set by the European Environmental Audit System (EMAS) for continuous improvement in operational environmental protection.
On Friday, 1 September 2006, the managing partner of J. G. NIEDEREGGER GmbH & Co. KG, Mr Holger Strait, was presented the EMAS certificate by Lübeck Chamber of Commerce President Jorkesch.
A DQS certificate in accordance with ISO 14001 is the document recognised worldwide as proof of a functioning, successful operational environmental protection programme.
The great importance given to environmental protection and the principles of action stemming from it have already led to many individual measures in the past:
- Raw materials are only drawn from regenerative sources and they are regularly examined in terms of environmental stresses.
- All of the packaging waste that remains after consumption is recyclable.
- Waste separation for paper/cardboard, plastics, ceramic glass, special waste as well as dry and wet residual waste has been practiced since 1991.
- Pallets and jute sacks that are sorted out are handed over to recycling firms.
- Biological waste products that can be used, such as almond shells, are supplied to biogas plants for alternative energy production.
- We buy our raw materials as far as possible in lorries or silo vehicles, large bundles such as big bags and smaller amounts in reusable or recyclable bundles.
- To reduce energy consumption, two old oil-heating boilers were replaced in September 2005 with a condensing-gas boiler.
- Reduction of the use of water by switching the cooling water system to a circular flow system.
All employees, from production to management, of course work hand in hand so that additional environmental objectives can be achieved. These should be carried out by 2010.
1st objective: Reduction of energy consumption
2nd objective: Protection of resources
3rd objective: Employees’ environmental knowledge
